The Historic Calvary Baptist Church has a rich church history that dates back to 1878. At the close of the American Civil War and Reconstruction, a group of free slaves coming from the south to escape harsh living conditions and the effects and impact brought on by slavery, relocated in the downtown area of Wichita. Many who were a part of this move to the heart of America formed the Colored Peoples Church. The Colored Peoples Church later became known as, Calvary Baptist Church. Calvary has stood as a community icon for over a century. Calvary is the oldest African American Baptist Church in the city. A church rich in Christian values we have embraced a ministry platform built on faith, family engagement, brotherhood, missions and community outreach. Calvary is located in the heart of the Wichita community and serves a diverse group of worshipers spanning four generations. Calvary is a loving church whose mission is to demonstrate the love of Christ to all. Those who come to our church will experience genuine people who love God, inspiring praise and worship and biblical preaching and teaching that informs, convicts and lifts believes of all ages to a higher level of faith and knowledge of God and his purpose for their lives. Our senior pastor is Dr. T. La Mont Holder, a native of Quincy, Illinois. Dr. Holder has served our church family since January of 2005.
